By the autumn of 1944 the Reichsverteidigung — the defence of the Reich itself — had become the dominant mission of the Luftwaffe fighter arm. Jagdgruppe 10 was one of several specialist Sturmgruppen and dedicated Reichsverteidigung units established to counter the relentless waves of American heavy bombers striking Germany from the west. Based at Parchim in Mecklenburg, the Gruppe flew heavily armed Fw 190 A-8s modified with additional 30 mm cannon to destroy bombers in frontal or close-range attacks — tactics that demanded exceptional nerve from their pilots. "Red 11" represents a machine and a moment when German fighter pilots were flying into formations of B-17s and B-24s under increasingly desperate circumstances, outnumbered and facing ever-stronger USAAF escort cover from P-51 Mustangs and P-47 Thunderbolts.
The Airfix New Tool A01020 in 1/72 is one of the more pleasant surprises in the budget end of the scale modelling market. Released as part of Airfix's ongoing retooling programme, it offers a very high count of accurately proportioned parts, fine recessed panel lines across most of the airframe, and commendably sharp moulding of the BMW 801 D-2 radial. The decal sheet is notably generous, covering several well-researched markings options with good register and colour density. The kit's main criticism is one shared by several modern 1/72 releases: the panel-line engraving, while crisp, errs on the deep side and can look somewhat exaggerated under raking light or heavy weathering. That said, as an inexpensive kit presenting a good overall appearance, it competes well above its price point and makes an excellent starting point for added detail.
The Eduard photo-etch set used here was designed for the Revell Fw 190 A-8, which required careful test-fitting and some minor trimming to adapt it to the Airfix kit's slightly different geometry — most pieces fitted with modest persuasion, and the resulting cockpit detail upgrade is well worth the effort. HobbyBoss wheels were sourced as a drop-in replacement for the kit items, giving a more realistic tyre profile and sidewall texture. The Kagero decal sheet provided the "Red 11" Jagdgruppe 10 markings with excellent colour accuracy and minimal silvering. Painting was carried out with Gunze Sangyo Mr. Color lacquers, including the characteristic late-war RLM 76 / 75 / 74 splinter scheme, with Mr. Hobby Color H90 (semi-gloss black) used for the engine cowl. The Aztek A470 airbrush gave clean, controllable results for both the hard-edged uppersurface mottle and the freehand demarcation lines. Pastels ground from chalk sticks were applied dry to simulate panel fading, exhaust staining, and general service wear.
